Article 14

PLEIONE FORMOSANA

Pleione's originate in the Himalayas and the mountainous regions of China. The most important thing to remember about them is that they require excellent drainage.

Pleione's grow from a pseudobulb which should never be covered over. You will notice that the bulb sits only partly in soil and that is how it should remain. At the end of the year the pseudobulb will send out small bulbils if it is fed well. The old pseudobulb will then shrivel up and should be discarded. The new bulbils will produce flowers in two to three seasons.

Light: light shade
Planting: grow in very free draining humus rich soil with the bulb mostly sitting on top of the soil. I would recommend mixing in a small amount of bird gravel and perlite in with the soil. Plant in a well sheltered area. If planted in a pot bring in close to the house during the winter
Moisture: Do not over water in early Spring as the new roots are developing. Once the plant has developed a root system regular watering is fine
Fertilizing: feed regularly with a well balanced liquid fertilizer
