A Checklist of Things To Do in the December Garden
  • You can still plant or transplant your perennials, deciduous trees and shrubs as long as the ground isn't frozen or too wet.
  • Prune your apple and pear trees now.
  • Prune maples, birches and grape vines
  • The last of the leaves should have fallen by now. Make sure to remove them from the lawn and either compost or add to your garden beds as a mulch.
  • If you have a pond make sure you remove all the leaves that may have ended up in it during the fall. It doesn't usually get cold enough long enough to affect your fish but if we do get a long cold snap make sure to keep a part of the pond open so enough oxygen gets in for them.
  • Now is a good time to take hardwood cuttings.
  • Raise patio containers off the patio so they aren't sitting in water all winter and to protect your patio.
  • Try to avoid walking on your lawn when there is frost on it. You can damage the grass.
